Union field hockey falls to Hartwick in overtime, 4-3

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - Although senior captain Laura Pacheco scored three goals, it wasn't enough as Hartwick College (4-6) came from behind to edge the host Dutchwomen, 4-3, on Tuesday evening.

Hartwick rallied from a 2-0 deficit in the first half to tie the game at 2-2 just after halftime. In the second half, the Dutchwomen took a 3-2 lead on Pacheco's goal with 3:53 remaining in the game. However, Hartwick tied the game again when Courtney Coons scored just 44 seconds later.

In the second overtime, Sarah Ryan scored the game-winner when she scored on a backhander inside the left post. Pacheco, who had scored one goal coming into the game, gave Union a 1-0 lead when she scored off a pass from Rachel Andreana with only 3:29 elapsed in the game. Pacheco made it 2-0 when she scored off a pass from Hannah Madden with 16:36 left in the first half. Hartwick started its comeback when Emily Marcotte scored her first goal of the season with 2:15 eft in the first half. Early in the second half, Milkaelan Stuligross scored on a rebound to tie the game at 2-2.

That set the stage for Pacheco's third goal of the game which came on a 20-yard shot off a pass from Madden. With 3:09 left in regulation, Coons scored on a shot through traffic to tie the game for the second time. Catie Kondi earned her second assist of the game on the goal by Coons.

The first overtime period was marked by several solid saves by Union goalkeeper Laura Aptowitz and Hartwick's Shannon Carter. In the first overtime period, Aptowitz faced eight shots by Hartwick and made seven saves. Hartwick held an 8-3 edge in shots during the first overtime.

Ryan scored the unassisted game-winner midway through the second overtime period as she scored her seventh goal of the season.

Union outshot Hartwick by a 24-20 margin in the game. However, Hartwick dominated the overtime periods with a 13-4 advantage in shots.
Aptowitz paced the Union defense with 13 saves, including nine in the two overtime periods. Carter made ten saves for Hartwick.

The Dutchwomen completed a three game homestand and now plays Saturday at St. Lawrence in Liberty League action.
