Dutchmen Shutout #13/13 Merrimack

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass.—The Union College men's hockey team posted a 4-0 shutout victory over No. 13/13 Merrimack on Saturday afternoon at Lawler Rink.

For the first time since November 9, 2012, two defensemen scored two consecutive goals in the first period when Charlie Vasaturo and Greg Coburn led the Dutchmen to a 6-2 victory over Harvard.

Today defensemen Noah Henry and Nick DeSimone both tallied first period goals. Henry posted up on the far side of the right faceoff circle and blasted one in off a Brendan Taylor assist to put the Dutchmen up 1-0 with 12:02 left in the first. Jeff Taylor fed a pass to Spencer Foo, who then passed it back to DeSimone whose shot bounced off the left corner and into the back of the net with 10:59 left in the game. Union entered the first intermission leading 2-0.

Co-captain Matt Wilkins posted a lone goal in the second period. Brett Supinski stole the puck from behind Merrimack's goal, took a shot and then Wilkins pushed the puck in off the rebound.

Union entered the third period leading 3-0. Less than two minutes into the period and Eli Lichtenwald popped in Union's fourth and final goal. Michael Pontarelli shot from the left faceoff circle, and Lichtenwald found the net off the rebound.

Alex Sakellaropoulos made 23 shots in the shutout. With the victory Sakellaropoulos, Lichtenwald and Wilkins were named first, second and third stars, respectively.

The Dutchmen return home as they take on ECAC opponents Harvard and Dartmouth on Dec. 4 and Dec. 5, respectively, at 7:30 p.m.
