Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Foo leads Dutchmen to second straight overtime win

Union beats Vermont, 3-2

SCHENECTADY, N.Y.-Sophomore forward Spencer Foo scored 3:54 into overtime to give the Union College men's ice hockey team a 3-2 win against the University of Vermont, Sunday evening at Messa Rink.

The Dutchmen, who notched their second consecutive overtime win and extended their unbeaten streak to five (4-0-1), improve to 7-6-4, while the Catamounts go to 5-12-2.

Foo pushed his point streak to five games with a goal and an assist, producing his third multi-point game in four contests. Ryan Scarfo potted his team-leading 10th goal and Ryan Walker netted his first career goal. In goal, Alex Sakellaropoulos stopped 34 shots, including 18 in the third period for his sixth win of the season.

Conor O'Neil and Brendan Bradley each scored for the Catamounts. In goal, Packy Madson made 32 saves on 35 shots.

O'Neil put the visitors in front 2:49 into play, taking a feed from Craig Puffer on a two-on-one and tucking a wrist shot high blocker side. The goal marked the third time in four games that Union conceded a goal in the opening three minutes of play.

Tyler Hynes came close to producing the tying goal with back-to-back shots from close range with 2:38 remaining, but Munson made a pair of pad saves to keep his team in front heading into the second.

Vermont struck again quickly in the second, doubling its lead 54 seconds into the frame. Liam Coughlin picked out Bradley with a pass from behind the net for a one-time finish.

The Catamounts kept the Dutchmen without a shot on goal for the first 4:06 of the second, including a two minute five-on-three, but Union finally broke through at 9:18 on Ryan Walker's first career tally.

David Roy sent a pass to Hynes, whose initial shot was saved but Walker followed close behind, jamming in the rebound to make cut the Dutchmen's deficit in half.

Scarfo knotted things up at 2-2 4:02 later with his team-leading fifth power-play goal and his fourth goal in as many games. Brett Supinski fed a pass to Foo down low and he drove to the front of the net. The puck found its way to Scarfo, who chipped a backhand high glove side.

The Catamounts controlled play in the third period, outshooting the Dutchmen 18-8, but Sakellaropoulos turned away every shot he faced, sending Union to its fifth overtime game in its last seven contests.

Vermont had its best chance of the extra stanza at 2:25, but Sakellaropoulos came up big again to deny Jarrid Privitera's attempt from in tight.

With the Catamounts pressing late in the frame, Foo won a race to the puck near the Dutchmen blueline and chipped the puck into the neutral zone, leading to a Union counterattack.

Foo collected the puck at center ice and broke into the middle of the Catamounts zone from the right wing, delaying his shot long enough to avoid a sliding Vermont defender. He then unleashed a wristshot high glove side to give Union its second straight overtime win and extend its unbeaten streak to five (4-0-1).

The Dutchmen return to action in 2016 at the 27th Annual Ledyard Classic hosted by Dartmouth College. Union takes on Merrimack Jan. 2 before facing Robert Morris on Jan. 3.
