Melissa Black secured her 500th save on the season in the first period of the game. Union dropped a 2-1 overtime decision to Yale on Saturday afternoon at Messa Rink.
The Dutchwomen scored in the first 45 seconds of the first period to go up 1-0.
Kathryn Tomaselli made a pass from the far right boards to
Jacyn Reeves at the blue line, then broke free and passed it past Hanna Mandl's left leg. They held onto that lead throughout the first period, even though they were outshot 21-3.
Union held onto the lead until Yale forced one in with seven seconds left in the second. The puck got caught up on the boards to the back right of Union's goal, Jamie Haddad popped it out to Krista Yip-Chuck to redirected it to Taylor Marchin at the point. Marchin sent it towards the goal and Janelle Ferrara, who was set as the screen, popped it in.
Union and Yale stayed stalemate for the third period. Tomaselli had at least three breakaway opportunities but Mandl was able to produce saves. The Dutchwomen outshot Yale 11-7 to force an overtime.
In overtime, Yale was able to post a quick goal to secure the win. Jordan Chancellor won the faceoff and passed it to the right to Mallory Souliotis. Souliotis nudged it to Phoebe Staenz who took it behind the net and popped it past Black.
Union's Tomaselli had totaled six shots, while the Dutchwomen produced 14 blocked shots.
The Dutchwomen head to Maine for a non-conference weekend series on Dec. 11 and Dec. 12 at 7 p.m., and 2 p.m., respectively.
