Union Shutout at Home by Yale

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. –  In a battle of defense versus offense, "D" won out Friday night at Messa Rink.  

Yale, the top defensive team in ECAC Hockey, received a shutout from Alex Lyon in defeating Union, the ECACH's top offensive squad, 2-0, before a near capacity crowd of 2,049 on White Out Night.

Mike Doherty's first period goal at the 16:16 mark stood up for the 15th-ranked Eli, who finished with a 33-23 edge in shots.  John Hayden added an empty netter (on the power play) with 34 seconds left in regulation to seal the win.

It was the first shutout loss for Union in 98 games, dating to Nov. 30, 2012.  Mike Vecchione placed a team-high six shots on goal while goaltender Colin Stevens finished with 31 saves.

Union plays host to Brown Saturday night at Messa.

Yale snapped a five-game losing streak to Union ... the contest was carried live by Time Warner Cable SportsChannel.
