Dutchwomen win at RIT 55-52 led by Thompson

ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT women's basketball team wrapped up the 2014-15 regular season by falling to Liberty League foe Union (16-8, 10-5 Liberty League) by a score of 55-52 in Clark Gym Friday night. RIT finished the 2014-15 with a 12-13 mark, while recording a 6-10 mark in conference play. The Dutchwomen have won three straight and seven of eight.

The Dutchwomen held a 43-39 advantage in rebounds, while both teams had 16 turnovers. Union shot 37.3 percent from the floor on 19-of-51 shooting, while hitting 16-of-25 from the line. Kate Thompson led Union with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Amy Fisher scored 10 points and added four rebounds.

Union has Senior Day Sunday vs. William Smith at 2 p.m. If the Dutchwomen win, they will make the LIberty League playoffs and open with a game at Skidmore or St. Lawrence.

The two teams exchanged the lead four times early on before Union's Natalie Leone gave the Dutchwomen their final lead with 3:10 left in the opening half. Union led by six going into the break, 27-21.

The Tigers would get within two points of the Dutchwomen three times in the second half, but were unable to clench the lead. Ashlynn Palmitesso hit a 3-pointer with ten seconds left to cut the Union lead to 54-52. RIT fouled on the inbounds pass to put the Dutchwomen on the line. Merissa Maiorano came up with a big defensive rebound and the Tigers were able to get a look at a 3-pointer that was blocked at the buzzer. RIT shot 36.1 percent from the floor on 22-of-61 shooting, while going 4-of-10 from the line.

Palmitesso led the Tigers with 18 points and two rebounds. Maiorano earned a double-double in her final game for RIT with 10 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. Sarah Wolcott, playing in her final collegiate contest, added 13 points and five rebounds.
