SCHENECTADY, NY -- Emily McGrail scored three goals with an assist to lead the Union College women's lacrosse team to a 12-2 win over Emerson in the 2015 home opener at Frank Bailey Field Thursday. The Dutchwomen improved to 1-1 while the Lions fell to 2-1.
Maggie Comiskey had three assists with a goal and
Natalie Sullivan added two scores to lead the Dutchwomen. Union outshot the Lions, 28-12 and had a 27-19 ground ball advantage. The Dutchwomen also forced 23 turnovers and were 16 for 20 in clears. Union also got single goals by
Jessica Farland,
Jackie Hagopian,
Haley Gould,
Cailin Pandolfi,
Maddie Lewis and
Allison Horst.
Kim Grinhaus made one save in over 44 minutes and
Jen Hughes stopped two in the final 15:26.
Meredith Weber and Marlee Galper scored the Emerson goals. Victoria Kanaris made nine saves in the visiting net. Emerson was 12 for 18 in clears and won nine of 16 draw controls.
Union scored the first seven goals of the contest. Sullivan opened the scoring 1:08 into the game on a free position shot, and McGrail made it 2-0 on a free position with 18:22 left in the first half. Comiskey got a pass from Pandolfi at 12:45 and McGrail's free position score at 11:01 made it 2-0. Comiskey assisted on the next three goals, by Hagopian at 8:10, McGrail a minute later (her fifth of the year), and Pandolfi with 1:02 left for the 7-0 lead. Galper put Emerson on the board with 16 seconds left in the first half with an assist from Guerin Morissette, notching her sixth goal of the young season.
Farland tallied at 28:06 of the second half from Sullivan, who then scored an unassisted goal 1:05 later for a 9-1 lead. Lewis got a pass from McGrail for a goal at 21:31 and
Haley Gould made it a 10 goal lead at 10:15 with an unassisted score. Weber's 11th of the year with 3:15 left preceded the final tally of the day by Horst for Union with 12 seconds remaining in the game.
Union is idle during exam week and returns to action March 22 at Stevenson.
