Softball opens with doubleheader in Florida



CLERMONT, FL -- The Union College softball team opened the 2015 season with a doubleheader in Florida, where the Dutchwomen will play 10 twinbills during the spring break. Union lost the opening game Saturday, 4-2 to Wellesley, and lost the second contest, 6-1 to Carleton.

In the opener, Wellesley scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth to break a 2-2 tie. Camille Corbin had two hits and two RBIs for Union, driving in both runs in the top of the fifth inning. Union had six hits in the game and Wellesley had nine hits. Anna Pisac had two hits and two RBIs for the Blue.

Allyson Staats gave up four earned runs and walked one while striking out four for Union. Madeline Bianchi earned the win with her complete game six hitter, sriking out eight and walking two while allowing two earned runs.

In the nightcap, Molly O'Brien drove in Joanna Chalifoux with the lone Union run in the second inning. Mary Steinberg had two doubles and scored two runs for the Knights. Dani Hennel pitched for Union and took the loss. Carleton had 12 hits in the victory.

Sunday's schedule features games against Middlebury at 9 a.m. and Chicago at 11 a.m.
