Staats stars in 7-1 win over Chicago

CLERMONT, FL -- Allyson Staats allowed eight hits in a complete game win and had a three run triple to lead the Union College softball team to a 7-1 victory over the University of Chicago in the second game of action Sunday. Earlier in the morning, the Dutchwomen lost 5-2 to Middlebury.Union is 1-3 on the young season.

Staats' bases clearing triple highlighted a six run second inning for the Dutchwomen. She struck out three and Camille Corbin, Dani Hennel and Molly O'Brien each drove in a run as Union led 7-0 after the top of the third.

Alyssa Stolmack and Olivia Haney had two hits each for the Maroon. Molly Moran gave up six runs, five unearned, to take the loss.

In the opener, the Panthers scored three runs in the top of the third and had nine hits on the day. Neve Stearns allowed three hits and struck out six for Middlebury. Hennel allowed five hits through five innings, and she had two of the Union hits. Staats drove in two runs in the contest with her first home run of the season, coming in the sixth inning.

Union's spring break schedule continues Monday with a 9 a.m. game vs. Carthage and an 11 a.m. game vs. Buffalo State.
