Softball downs Carthage highlighting Monday games

CLERMONT, FL -- Union softball continued the spring trip with a pair of games with delayed starts due to weather. But the Dutchwomen got both games in, defeating Carthage, 4-3 in the opener before losing to Buffalo State, 5-3 later in the day. Union is now 2-4.

In the opening game of the day, a morning contest which was delayed by rain, Union jumped out early. Camille Corbin blasted a two run homer, scoring Courtney Casey, in the top of the first. Lauren Jones had a two out RBI single in the bottom of the first to put the Lady Reds on the board.

Casey led off the third inning with a single and Corbin had an RBI double for Union's third run. Lindsay Cohen later walked with the bases loaded to bring in Corbin for a 4-1 lead. The Lady Reds got a run back on an RBI double by Becky Cronk in the fifth and Jones had a two out RBI single in the sixth. Union got two hits each by Casey, Corbin and Staats, who allowed nine hits and three earned runs while striking out four for her second win. Makenzie Walker took the loss for Carthage, giving up five hits and all four earned runs in two-plus innings of work.

Buffalo State had just five hits but scored five runs in the first inning and held on. Allyson Staats gave up just two hits in 5 1/3 innings of relief for Union. The Dutchwomen scored all three runs in the third inning featuring a two out 2 RBI hit by Joanna Chalifoux and an RBI hit from Dani Hennel, her second of the day. Staats had three hits to up her spring average to a team best .438. Alexis Haley drove in two of the runs in the bottom of the first as five different Bengals had one hit each.

Union is idle Tuesday then on Wednesday plays Elmhurst (9 a.m.) and Wisconsin-Whitewater (11 a.m.).
