Softball loses to Elmhurst, #14 Wisconsin Whitewater

CLERMONT, FL -- The Union College softball team continued spring trip action in Florida Wednesday with games vs. Elmhurst College and the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. The Dutchwomen lost to Elmhurst, 5-1 and ended the day with a 16-0 loss to the #14 ranked Warhawks.

In the opener, Katie Boals pitched five innings of one hit ball with three strikeouts to lead the Blue Jays. Stephanie Sturino earned the save, and the Blue Jays had 11 hits led by two each from Meg Griffin, Tiffany Potthast and Boals. With the game tied at 1-1, Elmhurst scored one in the bottom of the second and added three more in the fifth inning featuring a two run single by Boals.

The Dutchwomen scored their lone run in the top of the first, as Allyson Staats had a two out double to bring in Dani Hennel. Union had six hits for the game. Staats gave up three earned runs and struck out three.

The Warhawks tallied 16 hits in the game including five for extra bases. Maggie Hansen led UW-Whitewater offensively with two hits and seven runs batted in. Mackenzie Price had two RBIs and Mallory Klotz had three hits while Deven DuCharme added two hits. Bekka Houda pitched four innings and gave up one of the two Union hits, striking out five, while Cara Smoczynski alllowed one hit in one inning.

Dani Hennel and Joanna Chalifoux had one hit each for the Dutchwomen.

Union closes out the spring break Florida schedule Thursday. The Dutchwomen will play Thomas at 9:00 a.m. and Colby at 1:00 p.m.
