Union Falls to Williams in First Loss of the Season

BOCA RATON, Fla. – In a battle of top-10 teams, third-ranked Union came up short against 10th-ranked Williams, 16-10, on a hot and humid afternoon in south Florida.  The loss was Union's first of the season, and the team's first regular-season loss since April 16 of last year.

Union jumped to an early 2-1 lead in the first quarter when Nolan Stauffer and Cam Slatton scored a minute, 10 seconds apart. Williams, however, answered 20 seconds later on Bryson Bilbert-Bono's goal (his first of three on the day), which sparked a 5-0 run for the Ephs.

The Dutchmen trailed by three at halftime, 9-6, but weren't able to close the gap as Williams received four second-half goals from Steven Kiesel to remain unbeaten on the year.

Reaching double-figures in goals for the sixth time, Union was led offensively by Nolan Stauffer and Cam Slatton, who scored two goals each, along with Charlie Ross (1-2) and Adam Rosenthal (1-2), who turned in three-point efforts.

The final teams stats were remarkably close, with Williams holding a slight edge in total shots (49-45) and Union winning the ground balls battle (39-38).  The "U" also won 20-of-29 faceoffs and scored three times on man-up situations.  Connor Hall won 18 faceoffs and gathered a season-high 17 ground balls.

Paul Wehrum's squad resume Liberty League play this Saturday (March 28) at St. Lawrence.
