Softball sweep features no hitter and walk off

CLERMONT, FL -- Allyson Staats pitched a no-hitter and Joanna Chalifoux had a walk-off RBI single to lead the Union College softball team to a pair of victories Thursday in the final day of spring break games for the Dutchwomen. Union defeated Thomas, 8-0 in five innings in the first game and downed Colby, 3-2 in the second contest. Union, 4-6, will open the home season on April 1 vs. Utica.

In the first game against the Terriers, Staats pitched her second career no-hitter. It was the first no-hitter for Union since Staats pitched a five inning gem at home vs. Skidmore on April 6, 2013, a 5-1 victory. She walked one and struck out three. Camille Corbin had two of Union's seven hits. The Dutchwomen scored twice in the third with two unearned runs, and Becca Kaufman scored a run on a steal of home. Staats and Chalifoux had back-to-back RBI hits in the fourth.

Union won it in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, Corbin doubled and Staats walked. After a fly out, Kelly Breslauer had a pinch hit RBI single followed by Cohen's RBI single that produced the eight run lead to end the game.

Colby took a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the second contest but was shut down by Staats. She pitched 6 2/3 innings of scoreless relief allowing seven hits without a walk and striking out six. Dani Hennel had three hits and Courtney Casey and Niki Ditizio had two hits each. Union got on the board in the fifth on a two out RBI single by Casey, and tied it in the sixth with a two out RBI sinble by Ditizio. In the seventh, Hennel singled, went to second on a Casey single, and went to third on a wild pitch. She scored on a Chalifoux RBI single for the 3-2 victory.

Union, 4-6, will open the home season on April 1 vs. Utica. It will be the start of a homestand that features five doubleheaders through April 8.
