Baseball Drops Both Games to Clarkson in Saturday DH

SCHENECTADY, NY - The Union College baseball team fell to Clarkson in both games of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, 4-3 and 8-7, at Central Park. Sophomore Jake Fishman went 6-for-7 on the day with three RBIs to lead the Dutchmen offense. Freshman SS Zack Twitchell collected three hits in the two games and also drove in three runs.

GAME 1

After falling behind 1-0 in the third, Union answered with a three-spot in the top of the fifth. Twitchell doubled down the left field line to bring home Fishman and Eric Egan. Twitchell then stole third and was able to score as the catcher's throw went through the third baseman's legs and into left field.

Clarkson answered in the sixth on a sac fly by Greg Jasek and an RBI single from Chris Miller. In the bottom of the seventh and the score tied 3-3, the Golden Knights were able to load the bases with two outs against Fishman. Paul Ludden hit a weak ground ball to short and was able to beat the throw to first to give Clarkson a 4-3 victory.

Fishman pitched 6.2 innings, allowing four runs (3 ER) on six hits. He struck out five compared to four walks (1 IBB). With the loss, Fishman moves to 2-2 on the year.

GAME 2

The Golden Knights scored on a RBI ground out by Miller in the bottom of the first to take an early 1-0 lead. The Dutchmen responded with four runs over the course of the second and third.

Egan drove a ball to the left centerfield wall to score Fishman. An inning later, Faber also drilled a ball to the left center gap to bring in Anders Goetz. Two batter later, Fishman picked up a teo-run double scoring Faber and Kent Curran to give Union a 4-1 edge.

Clarkson cut the deficit to 4-3 with a run in both the 5th and 6th innings on RBI singles off the bats of Conor Martin Jasek. The Dutchmen increased their lead back to two in the top of the seventh as Fishman legged out an infield hit to second bringing Goetz across the plate.

The Golden Knights tied it at 5-5 however in the bottom half of the inning as John Coleman singled in two runners after Jamie Faber walked the bases loaded to begin the frame.

The game would go to extras as neither squad could score in the final two innings. In the top of the 10th, Labeck and Twitchell had back-to-back RBIs to give Union a 7-5 lead heading into the bottom of the 10th.

Miller led off with a double to right center off Jake Vesling. Miller came around to make it 7-6 after a throwing error by Labeck on a ground ball by Jasek. Vesling was able to retire the next batter on a ground out to short for the first out in the inning. But the next batter up, Clarkson's Dom Pirro, provided the final blow of the game, homering down the left field line to give the Golden Knights the 8-7 win.

Vesling was handed his first decision of the year finishing with a line of 2.1 IP, two hits and three runs (2 ER). He struck out three to go with one free pass. Fellow freshman Ryan Kuchar started the game, going 5.2 innings. He let up three runs (2 ER) on seven hits, punching out six and did not walk a batter.

Union and Clarkson will conclude their four-game series tomorrow with first pitch for Game 1 set for noon at Central Park.
