POTSDAM, NY - The Union College women's lacrosse team jumped out to a 9-3 lead in the first half and held on for a 10-9 win over St. Lawrence on Friday afternoon. With the victory, the Dutchwomen improved to a perfect 6-0 in conference play.
Ciara Dudeck led the way for Union, scoring a season-high four goals.
Emily McGrail and
Natalie Sullivan both netted a pair of goals while
Haley Gould and
Maggie Comiskey each tallied one for the Dutchwomen. Senior goalie
Kim Grinhaus made a season-high 15 saves between the pipes.
Union opened up to a five goal lead through the first 16 minutes which included a stretch of 2:37 minutes where the Dutchwomen found the back of the cage four straight times to make it 6-1.
The Saints scored two of the next three goals before Dudeck and Comiskey answered for Union to give the Garnet and White a 9-3 halftime advantage.
St. Lawrence netted the first four goals of the second half to cut the Union lead to 9-7 before Sullivan scored to put the Dutchwomen back in front by three at 10-7 with 17:15 left to play.
The Saints responded with two more goals to make it 10-9 with 2:42 remaining in regulation. Grinhaus made a big time save right in front of the cage on SLU's lone shot in the final 162 seconds as the Dutchwomen held on for the one-goal victory.
Union was outshot 34-22 and corraled 12 ground balls to St. Lawrence's 13 but won the draw control battle 13-8. The Dutchwomen also were 12-13 in clear attempts while the Saints were just 11-14.
The "U" will return to action tomorrow afternoon to face Clarkson. The opening draw control is set for 2:00pm.
