SCHENECTADY, NY -- Molly O'Brien had three hits and
Dani Hennel drove in two runs to lead the Union College softball team to a 4-2 win over SUNY Oneonta in the first game of a non-league doubleheader at Alexander Field Tuesday afternoon. The Red Dragons won the nightcap, 4-0, to improve to 22-10 on the season. The Dutchwomen are now 10-17.
Hennel had a two run two out single in the fourth inning in the first game. Brianna Rivera gave Oneonta 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a two out single. Union took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of that inning on a sacrifice fly by
Joanna Chalifoux and an RBI single by O'Brien. Jenn Brocco had an RBI double in the top of the seventh and there were runners on first and second with none out. But
Allyson Staats retired the next three batters to get the victory. It was her 10th win of the season. Staats allowed eight hits and two runs while walking one and striking out two.
Sabrina DeAngelis gave up six hits and four runs, two earned, while striking out four and walking two. Rivera and Katie O'Gorman had two hits each for the Red Dragons.
Rachel Hitt won for the eighth time in 11 decisions in the second game shutout. She allowed just four hits, all singles, and walked one batter. Jamie Whittam, Ashley Lefebvre and Nicole Marzillo had two hits each and Marzillo drove in two runs with a single in the fifth inning. Lichtenstein had an RBI single in the third and Whittam posted an RBI single in the sixth.
Union has another non-league doubleheader on tap Thursday, when the Dutchwomen host Utica at 3:30 p.m. at Alexander Field.
