WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - The Dutchmen fell behind 3-0 after the first three batters of the game and could not recover as the Union lost at Williams, 9-6, on Wednesday afternoon. Senior
CJ Worley led the offense going 3-for-4 with two RBIs while classmate
Anders Goetz had two hits and also drove in a pair for Union.
Ephs' SS Jack Roberts deposited an
Eric Beer offering over the right center field just three batters into the game to give Williams a quick 3-0 advantage. Two innings later in the third, the Ephs added two more runs off Beer on a run-scoring double, followed by a RBI single to make it 5-0. Beer lasted just three innings, allowing five runs (4 ER) on five hits and three walks to earn his first loss of the season.
Union got two runs back in away half of the fourth as Worley drove in
Jake Fishman with a single and Goetz followed to score Worley with a hit up the middle.
Williams answered with two runs of their own in the home half of the fourth as Roberts and Adam Dulsky had RBI doubles down the left field line to give the Dutchmen a 7-2 deficit.
Union saw its first five batters reach safely to begin the seventh inning as the Garnet and White tried to mount a comeback. Fishman, Worley and Goetz all drove in a run in three straight plate appearances as Union cut the Williams lead to 7-5. However, the Ephs retired
Zack Twitchell and
Jake Vesling to end the scoring threat.
After Williams made it 9-5 in the bottom of the eighth,
Ryan McGeown-Conron cut the lead to 9-6 in the top of the ninth with a pinch-hit RBI single to left center. The Dutchmen were able to load the bases to bring the go-ahead run to the plate with two outs in the inning but Williams' Jacob Slater got
Matt Ferdenzi to strikeout swinging to end the ballgame.
Union will return to the diamond to close out the regular season with a four-game series against the University of Rochester this weekend at Central Park. Before the first pitch on Sunday at 11:30am, the Dutchmen will honor their three seniors, Goetz, Worley and
Chris Pignatello.
