Union Defeats Nazareth, 15-12, in NCAA First Round

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Union used a balanced scoring attack, and overcame a three-goal deficit, to post a 15-12 win over Nazareth in an NCAA First Round game at Frank Bailey Field.  Union, which has won 15-of-16 home games over the past two seasons, will face top-ranked RIT in Rochester on Saturday in a rematch of the Liberty League Championship Game.

Trailing 9-6 midway through the third quarter, Union outscored Nazareth, 9-3, the rest of the way sparked by two spectacular goals.  Peter Richardson knotted the game at 11-11 to open the fourth quarter, partnering with Nolan Stauffer on a hidden ball trick.  Kyle Mason answered 2:02 later, flicking a shot behinid his back to give the 15th-ranked Dutchmen a lead they did not relinguish.

Union received two goals a piece from Richardson, Stauffer, Richard Gregory, Charlie Ross and Jack Scheufele. Ross notched his team-leading 45th goal of the season, extending his goal-scoring streak to 18 games in the process.

Union's Tom Staton struck just 13 seconds into the game, but it was the last lead Union would have until Mason's fourth-quarter tally.  The lead changed hands six times, with Stauffer providing the game-winner on a man-up situation with 8:29 left in regulation.

The 14th-ranked Golden Flyers received five points from Luke Wooters (two goals, three assists), who reached the 50-goal plateau and surpassed 100 points on the season.  Dan O'Brien and Will Fallo recorded hat tricks for Nazareth, which saw its five-game win streak snapped.

Connor Hall won 19-of-29 faceoffs against the nation's fourth-best faceoff specialist in Drew Simoneau, and the Dutchmen finished with a 41-26 edge in ground balls.  Stefan Basile made 11 saves in net in his final home appearance.
