Women's Soccer Opens Season with 1-1 Draw

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Union opened its 2015 season with a 1-1 double overtime tie against Elizabethtown Tuesday afternoon in a nonconference game held at Ira R. Herr Field.

The Blue Jays opened scoring in the 28th minute, using their hands not feet, as Kara Weller's throw-in from 25 yards out along the sidelines took a big bounce, hit off the gloves of Union goalkeeper Erica Matteo and rolled into the goal.  The goal was credited to Weller since she was the last player to touch the ball.

Union knotted the contest at 1-1 in the second half on a blistering shot from Sydney Keane, who found the upper right corner of the net from 22 yards out.  Keriann Mackey assisted on the play.

E-town doubled up on shots (18-9), but Matteo in her first career start as a freshman was up to the task, making six saves.

Briank Speck's club travels to Rochester Saturday for a game under the lights in the Flower City.

Notes: Besides Matteo, two other newcomers broke into the starting lineup – forwards Claire Kowalczyk and Valerie Taylor.
