Wyman and VanDoren Lead 3-2 Win over Middlebury

SCHENECTADY, NY—The Union College volleyball team defeated Middlebury College 3-2 (18-25, 25-20, 23-25, 25-20, 15-11) in their sixth-straight five set match on Tuesday evening.

Rachel Wyman and Ally VanDoren led the team with 19 and 14 kills, respectively. Van Doren also had five aces. Amanda Price had 44 assists while Katherine Moeller had 25 digs. Lauren Woods had nine total blocks (three solo and six assists)

The Dutchwomen started slow dropping the first five points of the first set, the battled back to close the gap to a difference of five, but the Panthers were able to close out the game.  Union was able to fight back in the second set to tie Middlebury four times before a kill from Kelley White won the game and tied up the match 1-1.

The third set was a lot of back and forth between the two teams including five points with the score tied up. The score never separated by more than four points between the two teams, unfortunately Middlebury was able to make the right changes and claimed the third set.

The Dutchwomen won three out of the first four points of the fourth set. Wyman led the team with eight kills and a .615 hitting percentage, and the team had a .234 hitting percentage with 10 players only accumulating five hitting errors. The "U" took a 20-16 and didn't look back in forcing a fifth set.

Union jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but Middlebury came back and tied up the score at 5-5. The game went back and forth and Middlebury was able to jump out to a two-point lead at 10-8 when the Dutchwomen called a timeout. Two kills from Wyman and an attack error from Middlebury gave Union an 11-10 lead as Middlebury called their timeout. Following the timeout, the Dutch went on a 4-1 run to close out the match with a 15-11 victory.

The Dutchwomen extend their record to 9-1 and head to Skidmore on Friday to open conference play against Vassar and St. Lawrence.
