NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – Union College captured its first win of the season with a 2-0 nonconference decision over SUNY New Paltz at Alumni Field Wednesday afternoon.
Senior
Breana Derella provided all the offense Union would need, scoring twice. She scored into an empty net in the ninth minute after eluding the goalkeeper at the top of the box, then converted on a header in the 60th minute off a pass from
Jessica Farland. The performance marked the second time Derella had scored two goals in a game
– a feat she also accomplished against Castleton State in 2013.
Allie Supranowicz and
Valerie Taylor took three shots each in helping the Garnet to a 20-11 shot advantage. Union finished with a 5-1 edge in corner kicks.
Rookie
Erica Matteo recorded her second shutout of the season, making five saves. After five games, Union is holding its opponents to less than one goal per game (0.80).
The Dutchwomen return to College Park Field Saturday to host Hartwick at 2:00 p.m.
