Union Downs Hartwick in Double Overtime

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – It's been a good week for Breana Derella on the soccer field.

After scoring two goals in a road win on Wednesday, Derella produced the game-winner in double overtime Saturday afternoon, leading Union to a 1-0 win over Hartwick at College Park Field. Union has won 13 straight games against Hartwick dating to the 2003 season.  The Hawks entered today's game undefeated with a six-game win streak.

Derella's game-winner was setup on a nifty cross from Jessica Farland, who launched a low liner from the right side just before reaching the end line. Derella broke towards the pass and one-timed a shot into the net with 2:53 left on the clock.

Union outshot Hartwick in overtime, 4-1, and finished with a 26-9 shot count for the game.  Rookie goalkeeper Erica Matteo made five saves to record her third shutout of the season, while also extending her shutout streak to 197 minutes.

Defenders Alice Hayden, Aly Leahy, Keriann Mackey and Stephanie Tate helped shutdown the Hawks.  The visitors didn't get a shot off until 35 minutes had elapsed in the first half.

Union opens Liberty League action on Tuesday (Sept. 22), traveling to Skidmore.

Notes: Five of Union's six games this season have gone into double overtime.
