SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Union opened its Liberty League schedule with a 1-0 setback to Skidmore under the lights at Wachenheim Field Tuesday evening.
The tightly-contested match was scoreless until the 83rd minute when Skidmore's Christina Sanzari scored from the top of the box for her first goal of the season. In the process, Union goalkeeper
Erica Matteo saw her shutout streak halted at 280 minutes. She finished with four saves on the evening in making her seventh consecutive start.
The Dutchwomen nearly tied the game in the closing seconds, but
Breana Derella's shot went wide of the net. Derella finished with a team-high four shots as Union recorded a 12-9 edge in total shots.
Brian Speck's squad continues league play on Saturday, traveling to William Smith. The Herons have won the last eight Liberty League titles.
