Union Loses to No.5 William Smith on the Road

GENEVA, N.Y. – Union is still looking for its first Liberty League win after falling to fifth-ranked William Smith, 1-0, Saturday at Cozzens Field.  The Dutchwomen dropped to 0-2 in league play while the preseason-favorite Herons won their league opener.

William Smith applied steady offensive pressure throughout the game, finishing with a 27-3 shot advantage.  Union goalkeeper Erica Matteo kept the game close by making 10 saves, raising her league-high saves average to 5.6 per game.

The Herons finally broke through in the 60th minute, when Katherine Campbell sent a long ball that Kara Shue chased down on the right side and buried a shot into the far left corner of the net.  Union was held to one shot on goal, that coming off the foot of Alice Hayden.

WS finished with a decisive edge in corners (10-1) in winning its fourth-consecutive one-goal game against Union.

Brian Speck's squad will host Westfield State in nonconference action Wednesday night (7:00 p.m.) from College Park Field.
