TROY, NY—The Union College women's ice hockey team fell 2-0 to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Friday afternoon at Houston Field House.
Leah Patrick got the start for the Dutchwomen and held RPI scoreless for the first 13 minutes, until Hannah Behounek took a shot from behind the left faceoff circle. Patrick's view was blocked by defenders as it popped in over her right shoulder. Rensselaer held the 1-0 lead for the rest of the first period.
The second period the two teams remained at 1-0 but it stayed close as the Dutchwomen tallied 11 shots and Engineers posted 12.
Entering the third period, Patrick continued to rack up saves as until with 10:11 mark when Makenna Thomas fed a pass from the right circle to Laura Horwood who slid it in on Patrick's right side.
Patrick tallied 30 saves in the loss.
Jamie Smith tallied six shots in the game.
The two teams match up again tomorrow at 3 p.m., at Messa Rink for a Mental Health Awareness Game. The teams will wear purple laces and use purple tape in support of Do It For Daron (DIFD), a foundation that raises awareness and inspires conversations about youth mental health.
