SCHENECTADY, NY -- Deshon Burgess scored a game high 16 points with a team high six rebounds and
Wade McNamara added 12 points as the Union College men's basketball team defeated Hobart College, 74-65 in a Liberty League game at the Viniar Athletic Center Tuesday night.
The Dutchmen evened their league mark to 5-5 (7-10 overall), while the Statesmen are 4-4 in the league and 8-9 for the season.
Zachary Bouton added 10 points and
Greg King had nine off the bench for Union,w hich shot 49%. Four players had four rebounds each and a total of 10 players contibuted in the balanced rebounding night. Union outrebounded Hobart, 38-33 and held the opponent to 20% three point shooting.
Luke Ruddy joined Burgess with a game high 16 points, and also led his team with seven boards. Jamal Lucas scored 14 and Colin Dougherty had 12 with four assists for the Herons. Hobart shot 36% and had just six turnovers on the night.
The game was tied at 7-7 but Union went on a 23-11 run over the next 9:08 for a 30-18 lead with 8:01 left in the first half. Union led by as many as 17 (37-20 with 5:38 left in the first half after a layup by
Ryan Whelpley). The Statesmen trimmed the leady to 42-29 by halftime. Union shot a blistering 54% in the first 20 minutes of play.
Lucas opened the second half with a layup for an 11 point deficit, but Union got it up to 18 with 13:38 left (59-41) and again 22 seconds later at 61-43. Six free throws over the last 1:21 iced the contest for the Dutchmen.
Union is idle this weekend and returns to action Monday, February 1 for a non-league game at Hamilton.at 8 p.m.
