Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

#1/2 Quinnipiac ends Dutchmen's unbeaten streak

HAMDEN, Conn.--Quinnipiac snapped the Union College men's ice hockey team's seven-game unbeaten streak with a 5-0 win, Thursday night at the High Point Solutions Arena.

The Dutchmen go to 9-7-4 overall and 2-6-1 in ECAC Hockey, while the #1/2 Bobcats improve to 18-1-3 and 9-0-2 in ECAC Hockey.

Quinnipiac took advantage of its first power play of the night, pulling out to a 1-0 lead at 14:36. Tim Clifton fed Landon Smith from behind the net, and he slid home a low one-timer from the slot for his sixth of the season.

Mike Vecchione looked to have netted the equalizer midway through the first, batting a puck out of the air and over the shoulder of Bobcats netminder Michael Garteig, only to have it called back for a high stick.

The Bobcats doubled their lead before the end of the frame, as Thomas Aldworth converted on a 2-on-1 with Tanne MacMaster at 17:08.

Quinnipiac extended its lead at 12:27 of the second with another special teams goal. Alex Miner-Barron was sprung on a breakaway after a Union miscue on a 5-on-3 power play. Sakellaropoulos turned away Miner-Barron's blast from the right circle but Clifton jumped on the rebound for his second short-handed tally of the season.

Travis St. Denis gave the Bobcats a 4-0 at 2:27 of the third with his seventh power play goal of the year, beating Sakellerapolous with a wrist shot high to the blocker side.

St. Denis put the game out of reach with his second of the game, jamming a shot inside the right post at 13:08.

Quinnipiac outshot Union 42-25. Sakellerapolous made 22 saves on 26 shots over the first 42:28, while Jake Kupsky made 15 saves on 16 shots over the final 17:32. Garteig turned away all 25 shots he faced for his Division I-leading seventh shutout of the season. The Bobcats finished 2-for-4 on the power play, while the Dutchmen were 0-for-4.

Union returns to action at 7 p.m., Friday, Jan. 8, taking on Princeton.
