McGrath's brace leads men's soccer to win against ACPHS

SCHENECTADY, NY—Junior defender Christopher McGrath scored two second-half goals to lead the Union College men's soccer team to a 2-0 win against Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, Tuesday night at College Park.

The Dutchmen improve to 9-4-1, while the Panthers go to 9-5-2.

Union had the majority of possession in the first half, outshooting ACPHS 15-3.

The Dutchmen came close in the 35th minute, but Panthers goalkeeper Matt Houlihan denied back-to-back close range efforts by Ethan Strauss and Pedram Malakian.

ACPHS had its best chance of the half just two minutes later when Noah Keith guided a strike into the hands of Union goalkeeper John Weitzman after being sprung on a breakaway.

McGrath put Union ahead from a set piece in the 66th minute, collecting a quick pass from Malakian and firing a strike into the top left corner from 18 yards for his first career tally.

The Dutchmen doubled their lead in the 75th minute when McGrath curled a low strike in off the post.

Union held the ACPHS to just two shots in the second half, outshooting the Panthers 31-5 for the contest, also owning a 7-1 edge in corners. Weitzman made two saves, earning his fifth shutout of the season. Houlihan stopped nine shots for the Panthers.

The Dutchmen go on the road to take on Liberty League leader at 3 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 22.
