Women's Volleyball Completes Perfect Weekend in Liberty League Play

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY -  A day after beating Vassar and St. Lawrence at home, the Union College volleyball team finished Liberty League play with a pair of victories over Clarkson University and Bard College Saturday in Saratoga Springs, NY to clinch the No. 3 seed in the conference tournament.

The first match came against Clarkson who was first in the Liberty League standings heading into the day with a record of 9-1. But just like the night before against Vassar, the Dutchwomen would add a second tally in the loss column for their opponents.

After falling behind by two sets 22-25 and 11-25, Union came roaring back to take the next two frames 25-21 and 28-26 to send the match to a deciding fifth set. In those first two sets the Golden Knights recorded just three attack errors but, in the next two the Dutchwomen forced 18 errors from their opponents. Union's stingy defense was lead by Katherine Moeller who finished with a team high 31 digs in the match.

The first half of the set was tightly contested as Union held a 8-6 lead midway through. Then with Brianne Hallock on the service stripe the Dutchwomen tallied the next five points to go up 13-6 including kills from Ally VanDoren, who lead the team with 15, and Emma Sprotbery, who tallied 13 kills of her own. After Clarkson battled back a bit Union would finish the Golden Knights off taking the fifth set 15-10 and the match in five.

In the second match of the day, Union squared off against Bard. The Dutchwomen would go on to sweep the Raptors in straight sets (25-8, 25-15, 25-16) as Morgan Clark, Sprotbery and VanDoren all tied for a team high nine kills in the match.

Union is back on the court Tuesday for its final home match of 2016 as it faces SUNY Poly. The match is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in Viniar.
