SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY - The Union College volleyball team opened up the Skidmore Invitational with a five set win (20-25, 25-18, 25-23, 23-25, 15-12) over SUNY-Geneseo Friday night in Saratoga Springs, NY.
Coming into the invitational, both teams were hot as Union had won five straight including their last four Liberty League matches while Geneseo had won four of six games. The Dutchwomen's streak helped them climb to fifth NCAA New York regional rankings.
In the opening set, the Dutchwomen lost a close as the Knights won by five points. Union would not allow Geneseo to take control of the match as the Dutchwomen came back to win the next two sets behind strong performances from
Ally VanDoren,
Alyssa Bonesteel and
Emma Sprotbery who all tallied double digit kills on the night.
Amanda Price had full control of the offense as she spread the ball all around the court finishing with 48 assists which is her second highest total of the season.
VanDoren lead the team with 15 kills while also notching five aces from the service line. Union would record 11 aces in total putting instant pressure on the Knights defense.
Geneseo would not go away despite the performances by the Dutchwomen. It would take the next set from Union 25-23 forcing a decisive fifth set.
In the final set, the Dutchwomen would fought off the Knights to win 15-12.
Union will be back on the court in Saratoga Springs as it will face SUNY-New Paltz and SUNY-Potsdam in the second and final day of the Skidmore Invitational.
