SCHENECTADY, NY - First-year netminder
Kate Spooner made a career-high 39 saves as the Union College women's hockey team fell to No. 7/6 Colgate University in their ECACH opener at Messa Rink Friday afternoon.
The game was scoreless through the first 15:50 minutes of the game before the Raiders broke the deadlock. Livi Altmann received a pass from Annika Zalewski at the top of the left circle firing a shot on net that just slid past Spooner into the net.
Up 1-0 heading into the second period, the Raider pressure continued on Spooner as she stopped all 18 Colgate shots in the period to keep the Dutchwomen close. Union had two opportunities in the slot but, they were saved by Colgate goalie Julia Vandyk.
In the first two periods, Union had three powerplay opportunities but, were unable to convert managing three total shots on net.
The Raiders would add their second of the game at the 6:50 mark of the third. Jessie Eldridge found the scoresheet taking a line to line pass from Chelsea Jacques as she carried it in on the right wing before firing a wrist shot past Spooner making it 2-0.
The Dutchwomen would pull Spooner but, they were unable to find the back of the net as Union was held scoreless for the second time this season.
Union is back on the ice tomorrow for the 10th annual Pink at the Rink game as it plays Cornell. Puck drop is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at Messa Rink. The Big Red lost to RPI 1-0 Friday afternoon in Troy, NY.
