Leahy's late goal sends women's soccer into Liberty League Tournament

SCHENECTADY, NY—Aly Leahy scored from a penalty with 5:22 remaining to propel the Union College women's soccer team to a 3-2 win against Vassar and the fourth seed in the Liberty League tournament, Saturday afternoon at College Park.

The Dutchwomen (8-5-4, 3-2-2 Liberty League), who will be making their first conference tournament appearance since 2012, take on No. 1 William Smith in the Liberty League semifinals on Tuesday in Geneva, N.Y.  The Brewers (9-7-1, 6-2 Liberty League) will be the second seed in the tournament and will host Rensselaer.

Katie Monahan and Michelle Staples rounded out the scoring for Union, while Sydney Keane produced her third multi-point game of the season with a pair of assists. In goal, sophomore Kelsey Hartsoe made four saves.

Vassar pulled out to a 1-0 lead 13:08 into the first half on Audrey Pillsbury's seventh goal of the season.

Monahan provided the response for the Dutchwomen 25:05 into the stanza with her team-leading eighth tally of the season and her thid in the last two games on an assist from Keane.

Rebecca Andrews restored the Brewers advantage early in the second stanza, converting on a penalty kick at 56:05, but Staples netted the equalizer just 1:53 later on a pass from Keane.

With the game looking like it was headed for overtime, Vassar was whistled for a handball in the box. Leahy stepped up and buried the ensuing penalty to give Union the 3-2 win.

Brewers goalkeeper Stephanie Tapolsky made four saves. Vassar outshot Union 14-12, while the Dutchwomen held a 3-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Before the game, Union honored its four seniors: Alice Hayden, Keriann Mackey, Victoria Marotta and Michelle Staples.
