Aptowitz, Leyland lead 2-0 win

SCHENECTADY, NY -- Laura Aptowitz made 11 saves and Charlotte Leyland scored both goals as Union College defeated St. Lawrence University, 2-0 in a Liberty League field hockey game at Frank Bailey Field Saturday. The Dutchwomen broke a four game losing streak and improved to 4-7, 1-2 in the league. The Saints are also 4-7 overall and 1-2 in the Liberty League.

Union outshot St. Lawrence, 22-19, as Julia Hudson made nine stops for the Saints. The visitors had an 11-9 advantage in corners.

The first half was scoreless but both teams had numerous chances in a wide open first 35 minutes. Aptowitz and Hudson each made five shots, and the teams combined for 23 shots including 12 for the Dutchwomen. Union had five shots in the first 7:54 of the contest, and Aptowitz made four saves on the Saints in the final 19 minutes. The Saints had nine corners to Union's five after the first half.

The Dutchwomen broke the ice at 42:12. Charlotte Leyland scored her sixth of her super freshman season, scoring from nine yards out on the left side after an assist from Sarah Wilkinson.

Union added insurance at 48:02 when Leyland notched her second of the day and seventh of the year. She got a give and go running feed from Hannah Christain, who found her on the left side five yards from the cage and it was 2-0 Dutchwomen.

Aptowitz came up big in preserving what would be her second shutout of the season. She made a diving save off a shot from Lucy Stillman at 63:31, and also made back to back stops at 68:17 and four seconds later.

Union is home again on Tuesday night, September 11, to host St. John Fisher for a non-league game at 6 p.m. at Frank Bailey Field.
