WORCESTER, Mass.—The 20
th-ranked Union College men's hockey team scored two goals in the final 3:16 but it could not overcome a three-goal third-period deficit, as it fell 6-4 against Holy Cross, Tuesday night at the Hart Center. The Dutchmen, who had their six game unbeaten streak snapped, go to 6-2-1, while the Crusaders move to 4-1-1.
Sebastian Vidmar tallied two goals for Union, while
Spencer Foo produced a multi-point game with a goal and an assist, extending his point streak to seven games.
Anthony Rinaldi rounded out the scoring for the Dutchmen, while
Jeff Taylor had a pair of helpers. In goal,
Jake Kupsky 29 saves.
Brett Mulcahy led the Holy Cross with a pair of goals, including the game-winner. Spencer Trapp had three assists and Tommy Muratore contributed two assists. In goal, Pat Berrafato stopped 32 shots for his fourth win of the season.
Danny Lopez put Holy Cross in front at 6:12, scoring on a rebound from the bottom of the right faceoff circle, but Vidmar answered for Union just 2:42 later.
Taylor's shot from the point was knocked down by a Holy Cross defensemen and Vidmar was the first to react, tucking home a backhand from the low slot.
The Crusaders regained their lead 2:06 into the second when Mike Barrett's point shot rang off the post and bounced in off the back of Kupsky's skate.
Rinaldi tied things up at 2-2 at 9:16, collecting a rebound in the right faceoff circle and sliding a shot past a screened Berrafato.
Cole Maier and
Mark Dufour each registered an assist on the goal.
Scott Pooley gave Holy Cross its third lead of the game at 6:23 of the third, beating Kupsky with a short side wrist shot on an odd-man rush, and Mulcahy pushed the the advantage to three with back-to-back goals in 1:46.
He potted his first of the game on a wraparound at 12:05 and added his second from a rebound at 13:51.
Vidmar's second of the game cut Union's deficit to two at 16:44, and
Spencer Foo jammed home a loose puck at 18:05 to make it 5-4.
Mike Vecchione had an assist on the Foo goal, extending his point streak to seven games.
T.J. Moore sealed the win for the Crusaders with an empty netter at 19:14.
Union outshot Holy Cross 36-35 and finished 0-3 on the power play. The Cruaders went 1-3 with the man advantage.
Union returns to ECAC Hockey play this weekend, hosting No. 16 Yale on Friday, Nov. 4 before facing Brown on Saturday, Nov. 5. Puck drop for both games is scheduled for 7 p.m.
