SCHENECTADY, NY -- Jenni Barra scored 14 points and
Nicole Conley added 13 with seven steals to lead the Union College women's basketball team to a 66-34 victory over Gallaudet University in the home opener at the Viniar Athletic Center Friday night. The Dutchwomen are now 2-0 while the Bison lost their season opener.
Barra made seven of eight free throws and
Erin Lyons added nine points in the game in which all 16 players saw action.
Abby Katz had seven points and Lyons and
Rebecca Shamah pulled down five rebounds each. Katz added five steals and Barra added three assists. Union shot 57% in the first quarter and 46% for the game.
Jakkisha Smith led all players with 20 points for Gallaudet while posting a double-double with 10 rebounds. She joined Conley with seven steals. Tuesdae Dunklin had seven points and Kelsey Hudson had seven rebounds. Kelli Barnes and Lawjen Ashmore led the Bison had five rebounds each, as Gallaudet outrebounded Union, 41-36. The guests shot 26% for the game.
Union had a 21-11 lead after the first quarter and held the Bison to five points in the second quarter to take a 36-16 lead into the half. Union's largest lead in the half came when
Lily Abarbanel made it 36-15 with 1:33 left on a jumper. The largest lead of the night was 34, when
Juliauna Dunlop made a free throw with 4:18 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Union is home again tomorrow for a 6:30 p.m. contest against St. John Fisher. Gallaudet plays at Elmira Sunday at 2 p.m.
