SCHENECTADY, NY -- Caroline Robertson scored 18 points with nine rebounds and St. John Fisher College came back from a five point overtime deficit to defeat host Union College, 56-52 in a non league basketball game at the Viniar Athletic Center Saturday night. The Cardinals are now 1-2 while the Dutchwomen are 2-1.
Emily Piacentini scored 14 and Nicole Robinson had seven rebounds off the bench for Fisher. Maria Kelleher had eight points for the visitors. In a defensive show by both teams, the Cardinals forced 30 turnovers and allowed 30% shooting by Union, while the Dutchwomen forced 26 turnovers and forced the Cardinals to 31% from the floor. Fisher outrebounded Union by a slim margin, 43-42.
Erin Lyons had 15 points and
Abby Katz 12 for Union, while
Nicole Conley joined Robertson with the game high nine rebounds. Conley added eight points.
The teams were tied at 9-9 after the first period and Union had an 18-13 lead at halftime. Fisher's Piacentini's three pointer just before the buzzer af the end of the third quarter gave the guests a 28-22 lead. In the fourth, Robertson's three point play made it 33-22, the largest lead for Fisher, with 9:19 left in the period. But Union came all the way back to tie it with 11 seconds left on a layup by Katz, and it was 43-43 at the end of regulation.
Union came out hot in the OT, with a layup by Katz and a three pointer by Conley making it 48-43 with 3:08 left in the overtime. Union also led by five with 1:33 remaining in the OT after two
Lily Abarbanel free throws. But Kellher had a three and a layup by Paicentini tied it at 52-52 with 53 seconds left. The Cardinals made five of six free throw attempts in the final 41 seconds to pull out the win.
Union is back in action on December 1 to host Hamilton at 7 p.m.
