PRINCETON, N.J. –The 18
th-ranked Union College men's hockey team scored five second-period goals en route to a 7-3 ECAC Hockey win against Princeton, Friday night at Hobey Baker Rink. The Dutchmen go to 9-3-2 overall and 5-1-1 in ECAC Hockey, while the Tigers move to 2-7-1 overall and 0-6-1 in conference play.
Union's top line of
Mike Vecchione,
Spencer Foo and
Sebastian Vidmar each contributed a goal and two assists. Foo's three-point night extends his point streak to 12 games, giving him 21 points in that span (5 g, 16 a).
Nick DeSimone and
Brett Supinski each had a goal and an assist and
Brendan Taylor and
Vas Kolias rounded out the scoring for the Dutchmen. In goal,
Alex Sakellaropoulos made 26 saves to improve 8-1-1.
Colton Phinney stopped 19 shots in 38:33 of action, while Ben Halford made 12 saves in relief for Princeton. Max Verroneau led the Tigers offense with a pair of goals.
Union opened the scoring at 4:21 when
Sebastian Vidmar drilled home a one-timer from the slot for his third in the last four games. Foo and Vecchione each picked up an assist on the goal.
Verroneau responded for the Tigers with a power-play goal at 8:30 and Kuffner put Princeton in front at 16:33, beating Sakellaropoulos with a on the blocker side with a wrist shot.
The Dutchmen bounced back quickly in the second, regaining the lead with two goals in a 47-second span.
After Vecchione finished off a feed from Foo on a perfectly worked 2-on-1 at 4:34 for his Division I-leading 15th of the season, DeSimone scored with a shot from the point to restore Union's lead at 5:21.
Foo extended the lead with a wraparound goal at 14:06 and
Brendan Taylor converted on a rebound at 17:02 to make it 5-2. Supinski capped the scoring for the frame at 18:37 with his second in as many games.
Princeton pulled one back in the third on Verroneau's second power-play goal of the game, but that's as close as they would get. Kolias potted his first career goal with one second remaining to seal the 7-3 win.
Union outshot Princeton 38-29 and finished 1-for-5 on the power play, while the Tigers were 2-for-5 with the man advantage.
Union travels to take on No. 5/7 Quinnipiac at 7 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 3.
