Saints down Dutchmen, 75-63

SCHENECTADY, NY -- Kyle Edwards scored a game high 16 points and Kyle Kobis led all players with 11 rebounds to lead St. Lawrence University to a 75-63 men's basketball win at Union College Friday in the Liberty League opener for both teams. The Saints are now 7-1 on the season while the Dutchmen stand 4-5.

Riley Naclerio had 15 points and Willie Zachery added 14, while Edwards pulled down eight rebounds. The guests outrebounded the hosts, 45-36, and shot 39% for the game. Zachery also dished out four assists for St. Lawrence, which went to the line 39 times to Union's 20 and shot 77% from the stripe.

Wade McNamara led Union with his third career double-double, scoring 14 points with 12 rebounds, 11 on the defensive end. Greg King tallied 13 points and Deshon Burgess scored 10 with four assists. Union had just nine turnovers and shot 3% for the game. Each team shot an identical mark from the three point line, five for 23 (22%).

The Saints had a seven point advantage at halftime, leading 34-27. Union got to within two on a pair of free throws by King to make it 39-37 with 15:53 left in the second half. But The Saints went on a 9-1 run over the next four minutes featuring three points and an assist by Dom DeRegis. Union got as close as six with 8:11 left at 52-46, but the Saints opened it up to a 15 point lead with 3:59 left at 68-53 after two free throws by Ben Crawford. The Saints made six straight free throws over the final 1:03 to thwart a Union comeback.

The Dutchmen host Vassar Saturday at 2 p.m.
