SCHENECTADY, NY -- Erin Lyons scored a career high 22 points and
Sophie Borg added 18 to lead the Union College women's basketball team to a 69-60 win over St. Lawrence University a at the Viniar Athletic Center Friday. The Dutchwomen won the Liberty League opener for both teams, and improved to 5-4 while the Saints fell to 2-6.
Natalie Leone scored 10 points for the hosts, and Lyons, Leone and Borg led a balanced defensive effort with five rebounds each. Union had a 14-8 third quarter en route to the win, and shot 36% while forcing 23 turnovers and only turning the ball over eight times all game long.
Meghan Hynes led the Saints with 15 points and Cara Waterson scored 12. Shana Davner had 11 points and a game high seven rebounds for the Saints, who shot 43% for the game and had a 38-32 rebounding advantage.
Union led 20-18 after the first quarter and the game was tied at 33-33 at halftime. Union scored the first five points of the third for a 38-33 lead and led 47-41 at the end of the third period. They opened up the lead to nine at 52-43 with 6:45 left in the fourth period after a three pointer by
Jenni Barra. But the game was tied at 54-54 after an 11-2 run capped by two free throws by Jenny Scudder. Union pulled away late after a 60-58 lead with 2:34 left, outscoring the Saints, 9-2 in the final minutes featuring nine free throws.
The Dutchwomen host Vassar at 12 p.m. Saturday.
