SCHENECTADY, NY -- Sophie Nick had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds as the Vassar College women's basketball team defeated host Union College, 57-48 at the Viniar Athletic Center Saturday afternoon. The Brewers are now 1-1 in the Liberty League and 4-7 overall, while Union is also 1-1 in the league and 5-5 for the season.
Ariella Rosenthal scored 14 points and had nine rebounds and Isa Peczuh had nine boards with eight points for Vassar, which had a 51-39 rebounding advantage for the game. Vassar shot 34% for the game and made 79% from the free throw line.Â
Natalie Leone led Union and tied Rosenthal with the game high 14 points.
Erin Lyons had 11 with four assists and
Sophie Borg pulled down nine rebounds with eight points. Lyons and Leone each had seven rebounds for Union, which shot 30% but did force 16 turnovers.
Vassar led 13-10 after the first period and 27-22 at halftime. Union took a 34-33 lead with 5:20 left in the third after two free throws by Lyons, but the Brewers closed out the quarter with a 39-43 lead and led by as many as seven with 2:12 in the third. The Dutchwomen took a 46-45 lead on a Lyons three with 7:50 remaining in the fourth, but Vassar went on a 8-3 run and a layup by Nick with 1:40 left made it 53-46 and the Brewers wrapped it up in the final 16 seconds at the free throw line.
Union returns to action Friday at Skidmore at 6 p.m.
