Hython scores 1,000th point in 70-68 win at St. Lawrence

CANTON, NY -- Senior William Hython scored his 1,000th career point for the Union College men's basketball team in a 70-68 win over St. Lawrence at Burkman Gymnasium Friday night. Deshon Burgess led all players with 24 points and Hython added 11 rebounds in the triumph.

Hython became the 20th Dutchman to record 1,000 career points at Union. ?The last player to do so was Terell Winney '15, who also did it in his senior season. Hython got the point on a fast break layup, assisted by Kevin McNoble, with 11:38 remaining. Hython also recorded his 30th career double-double.

Kyle Kobis hit a 3-pointer with less than a minute to play cutting a Union College lead to just two points but St. Lawrence did not get another shot until a 3-point attempt at the buzzer that was off the mark.
 
Union (9-10 overall, 7-5 Liberty League) jumped out to an early lead with a pair of nine-point leads in the first 15 minutes of the game but St. Lawrence (11-8, 7-4) battled back trimming the lead to just two points at the halftime intermission.
 
In the second half, Union regained the advantage and took a 10-point lead at 52-42 with 11:05 left in the half. Kyle Edwards sparked a run with a 3-pointer as Riley Naclerio added a layup and Don DeRegis added a three-point play to trim the lead and a layup by Willie Zachery made it a 2-point game at 54-52 with 9:12 on the clock. The teams traded baskets over the next several minutes before Union took an eight-point lead with 4:45 left.
 
DeRegis hit a pair of free throws and Kobis added a layup cutting the lead to four before Naclerio drained his two free throws for a 67-65 Union lead with 1:36 left. The Dutchmen hit a 3-pointer to regain the five-point lead and Kobis answered with his 3-pointer 17 seconds later for the 70-68 score. Union's Deshon Burgess missed a jumper and Ben Crawford grabbed the rebound for St. Lawrence with 29 seconds left to set up the final play and shot for the Saints. With time running out, Edwards took an off-balance shot from the corner that was off the mark with one second left but Union was able to inbound the ball to run out the clock.
 
Edwards and Naclerio each scored 15 for the Saints while Zachery added 12 and DeRegis scored 10 off the bench. Kieran Miller had a team-high seven rebounds for St. Lawrence.

Union plays Saturday at Clarkson at 4 p.m.
