SCHENECTADY, N.Y.- The Union College men's ice hockey team registered a season-high 45 shots on goal but it was topped by Clarkson, 4-1, Saturday night at Messa Rink. The Dutchmen go to 10-10-7 overall and 3-8-4 in ECAC Hockey, while the Golden Knights, who have won four straight and are unbeaten in their last six, go to 14-10-3 overall and 6-6-3 in league play.
Union owned a 45-25 edge in shots for the game, but Clarkson scored on two of its first seven shots to jump out to a 2-0 lead.
The Dutchmen held the Golden Knights without a shot for the opening 13:49, but Clarkson struck first, capitalizing on its first power play.
Alex Sakellaropoulos kicked away A.J. Fossen's initial shot from the point, but the puck fell right to the stick of Christian Powers, who slotted home the rebound at 19:41.
The Golden Knights doubled their lead 31 seconds into the second period, as Aaron Thow blasted a shot from the point, beating a screened Sakellaropoulos high on the glove side for his first career tally.
Union continued to pile on the pressure in the third period, finally finding the back of the net at 14:58.
Mike Vecchione was hauled down on a short-handed breakaway and he converted on the ensuing penalty shot, going backhand to forehand before sliding a shot past the outstretched glove of Greg Lewis.
Perry D'Arrisso restored Clarkon's two-goal cushion just 2:24 later, roofing a shot on the glove side on a 2-on-1 after causing a turnover at center ice.
The Dutchmen nearly pulled one back with under two minutes remaining, but
Eli Lichtenwald's shot from the slot rang off the post.
Pat Megannety sealed the win for Clarkson with 1:31 to play, potting an empty-net goal for his fifth of the campaign.
Sakellaropoulos made 21 saves on 24 shots, while Lewis turned away 44 of 45 shots, including 18 in the third period.
Union hosts St. Lawrence at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 6.
