No. 17 Dutchmen Sneak Past Springfield

MASSAPEQUA, NY—The No. 17 Union College men's lacrosse team defeated Springfield College 13-12 in overtime on Saturday afternoon at John Burns Park in Massapequa, N.Y.

The Dutchmen trailed 4-2 in the first period, but continued putting points on the board. Tom Stanton, Paul Alberti, Cam Slatton, Peter Richardson and Josh Freilich all scored goals in the first half. Springfield led 7-5 at the half. Union outshot the Pride 23-15, they also tallied more groundballs (13-11) and won more faceoffs (8-6) in the first 30 minutes of play.

The Pride scored early in the third, but recorded a non-releasable 1 minute penalty which allowed the Garnet to score a man-up goal by Peter Richardson that started the team's momentum. Less than a minute later, Slatton fed it to Alberti for another goal. Springfield tallied two more goals to end the third.

Union opened play in the fourth period with five consecutive goals for the second-time this week. Daniel Chung's first career goal, turned the tables as it tied the game up at 10-10. Alberti and Nolan Stauffer both found the back of the net to take the lead 12-10. With under four minutes remaining in regulation, the Pride was able to tally two late goals to force the game to overtime.

With 56 seconds left on the clock in overtime, Stauffer passed it off to Richardson, unbeknown to Springfield, who found the back of the net and give the Union the 13-12 victory.

Sam Bebout finished with six saves while Sean Hanely tallied eight groundballs. Tom Lawton went 18-26 on the faceoff X with seven groundballs. Richardson finished with four goals and an assist. While Stauffer, Slatton and Alberti finished with four points each. 

The Dutchmen return to the turf again on Saturday, March 19 when they travel to Montclair State. The game is scheduled to faceoff at 12 p.m.
