No. 17 Dutchmen Fall to Montclair State in Overtime

MONTCLAIR, N.J.—The No. 17 Union College men's lacrosse team fell 12-11 in overtime to Montclair State University on Saturday afternoon.

In the first quarter, the Dutchmen tallied two quick goals from Cam Slatton and Daniel Kycia to go up 2-0. The Red Hawks countered that with a 4-0 run that was ended by a goal from Nolan Stauffer. Monrtclair State entered the second quarter 4-3.

The two teams battled for seven minutes before either team was able to score. The Red Hawks tallied two goals to extend the lead to 6-3. Jack Scheufele scored for the Dutchmen with 10 seconds left in the first half to close the gap to 6-4.

Union outscored Montclair State 4-2 in the third period. Peter Richardson posted two goals to start the second half off. Josh Freilich and Sean Pensavalle also tallied a goal each. Pensavalle's goal tied the score up at 8-8.

The Red Hawks took a 10-8 lead after six minutes of play, but the Dutchmen countered scoring three goals in five minutes. Thomas Stanton, Paul Alberti and Charlie McGovern all scored goals in the five minutes. With exactly one minute left, MSU was able to tie the game up at 11 and force overtime.
 
The two teams stayed tied at 11-11 for the remainder of the fourth quarter and through the first 1:15 overtime. With 2:45 left on the clock, Corey Carlson found the back of the net.

Union's Sam Bebout made 17 saves in goal, while Jack Cardew made 13. Stauffer finished with three points (one goal, two assists), while Richardson, Scheufele and Alberti finished with two points each. Stanton and Sean Hanley each recorded five groundballs, while Adam Johnson forced two caused turnovers.
 
The Dutchmen travel to Christopher Newport for a weekday game on Monday, March 21 at 4 p.m. in Newport News, Va.
