McQuiggan, who completed his degree in geology, traveled to the North Pole as part of a trip run by the U.S. branch of GEOTRACES to establish baseline measurements of chemicals in the Arctic (water, ice, sediment, snow and air).

A 2014 United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Scholar All-American, McQuiggan is currently working towards his master's degree in chemical oceanography at Old Dominion University.
