Union softball opens with night games in Florida

CLERMONT, FL -- The Union College softball team opened the 2016 season with a late night of action Saturday. The Dutchwomen had games against William Paterson and Plattsburgh State both delayed due to weather at the site delaying games earlier in the day. Union lost to William Paterson, 4-0 and Plattsburgh State, 7-0.

In the opener, William Paterson (11-0) had seven hits and Gabrielle Castelli pitched the shutout for her fourth win. Castelli allowed five hits while walking five and striking out five. Seven different players had a hit in the victory, and Castelli along with Salina Pellios and Rachel Wasilak each had an RBI.

Union freshman Dana Dolinko made her pitching debut and gave up three earned runs while striking out two in six innings. She did not walk a batter. Molly O'Brien and Brianna Godlewski had two hits for the Dutchwomen and the other was by freshman Kara Brown.

In the late nightcap, Plattsburgh (8-6) scored foru in the third and three in the fourth. Amanda Tantillo drove in five runs, three coming on her second homer of the year. She had two hits as did Jennifer Groat and Amy Glashoff. The Cardinals had nine hits. Katie Pitkin struck out seven and allowed two hits while walking one.

Dani Hennel went the distance for the Dutchwomen and also struck out seven with just one walk.

Union plays Sunday with a 9 a.m game vs. Chicago and an 11 a.m. contest vs. Bates.
