Baseball topped by No. 13 UW-Stevens Point, Farmingdale

WINTER HAVEN, Fla.-The Union College baseball team was edged by No. 13 Wisconsin-Stevens Point before dropping its second game of the day against Farmingdale State on Monday.

In the first game of the day, the Dutchmen (1-3) erupted for four runs in the top of the first. Eric Egan hisbeltedfirst homerun of the season, driving in three runs and Joe Ganim later scored on an error for the team's fourth run of the inning.

Union starting pitcher Jake Vesling kept UW-Stevens Point (2-3) off the board until the bottom of the fourth, when the Pointers took advantage of a Dutchmen error for their first run.

Zack Twitchell restored Union's four-run lead with an RBI in the top of the sixth and Harrison Glatt scored on an error in the top of the seventh to make it 6-1.

UW-Stevens responded with four runs in the bottom of the seventh to cut its deficit to one. Ray Greco started the charge with an RBI single. Clint Rose singled in the next at bat and Cody Hanke cleared the bases with a three-run shot, making it 6-5.

The Pointers completed the comeback in the bottom of the eighth, taking the only lead they would need. Ben Gerber delivered an RBI single and later scored on a Greco sacrifice fly to give UW-Stevens Point a 7-6 lead heading into the ninth.

Pointers pitcher David VanVliet did the rest, retiring the side in order in the top of the ninth to earn the save and secure the 7-6 win.

Glatt finished 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored, Kent Currant was 2-for-3 and Egan went 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Vesling went 6.2 innings on the mound, allowing four earned runs on seven hits with five strikeouts. Bill Christopher took the loss for the Dutchmen, allowing two runs on two hits over 1.1 innings.

In the second game of the day, Union found itself in a 14-1 hole three innings into the game after Farmingdale (2-8) rattled off four runs in the top of the second and 10 in the top of the third.

The Rams took advantage of some costly defensive errors in the third before the bats came to life. Ryan Osborne had a two-RBI double and Michael Ciullo and Joseph Roche each drove in two runs with back-to-back singles to cap the charge.

Tim Curtis got two runs back for the Dutchmen with a two-run double in the bottom of the sixth and Devin Coffey plated Jamie Faber with an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh, but the Rams proved to be too much, adding two more runs in the top of the eighth for the 17-5 win.

Jake Fishman went 2-for-2 at the plate, while Sam Kirschenbaum was 2-for-3. Osborne led the Rams offense, going 4-for-5 with three runs and three RBI.

The Dutchmen take on Fredonia for a doubleheader at 12:30 p.m.,Tuesday, March 22.
