Baseball completes four-game sweep of RIT

AMSTERDAM, N.Y.—First-year outfielder Joe Ganim had a career-best two home runs and five RBI to lead the Union College baseball team to 7-6 win and four-game Liberty League sweep over RIT, Sunday afternoon at Shuttleworth Park. The Dutchmen (11-4, 7-1 Liberty League) won game one 5-2.

In the first game, RIT (9-10, 4-4) got out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Phil Sammon singled home Taylor Hogan, and Daniel Zeglen was hit bit a pitch with the bases loaded.

The Dutchmen responded with three runs in the top of the third to pull in front 3-2. Jake Fishman started the rally with a triple and Jamie Faber delivered an RBI double in Union's next at-bat. Faber scored the team's second run of the game on an error and Kent Curran drove in Egan with a sacrifice fly to shallow center field.

Egan extended the Dutchmen's lead to 5-2 in the top of the fifth, belting a two-run shot to left field for his team-leading third home run of the season.

Union starting pitcher Nick Williams kept the Tigers scoreless for five innings and Matt Yonta retired the side in the bottom of the seventh for his first save of the year.

Williams posted his second win of the season, allowing two earned runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and five walks over six innings.

Faber finished 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored, Egan went 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored and Fishman was 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Brandon Cohall took the loss on the mound for RIT, allowing three earned runs on eight hits. Sammon led the Tigers offense, going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

The Tigers struck in the bottom of the first again in game two, taking a 1-0 lead on a Will Gorman groundout.

RIT starting pitcher Jameson Moran held the Dutchmen hitless through three and a third inning and scoreless through four, but Union's bats came alive in the top of the fifth.

Curran scored the Dutchmen's first run of the game with a solo home run and Ganim made it 3-1 two batters later, blasting a two-run home run to left field.

The Tigers answered quickly, regaining the lead with four runs in the bottom half of the inning. Hogan tied the game at 3-3 with a two-run single up the middle and Gorman followed with a double down the left field line. Sammon brought in both runners with a double to center field, giving RIT a 5-3 lead.

Union fought its way back into the game with two runs in the top of the seventh. Curran cut the deficit to 5-4 with an RBI double and Ganim knotted the game at 5-5 with a sacrifice fly.

After a scoreless eighth inning, the Dutchmen took the only lead they would need in the top of the ninth. Sam Kirschenbaum reached with a single and Ganim crushed his second two-run home run of the game in the next at-bat to make it 7-5.

The Tigers threatened in the bottom half of the inning, cutting the deficit in half when Gorman homered to left field, but that's as close as they would get as Yonta retired the final two batters for his first win of the season.

Yonta allowed one earned run with two strikeouts and two walks over 3 1/3 innings in the win. Union starting pitcher Jake Vesling surrendered five earned runs and seven hits with seven strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings.

Ganim finished 2-for-3 with five RBI and two runs scored and Curran went 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored

Kyle Povlock suffered the loss for RIT, allowing two earned runs on two hits over two innings. Morgan gave up three earned runs on three hits over 4 1/3 innings and Brett Bouchard allowed two earned runs on five hits over 2 2/3 innings.

Union, which has won seven straight games, hosts Williams at 4 p.m., Tuesday, April 12 at Shuttleworth Park.
