SCHENECTADY, NY -- Dana Dolinko and
Dani Hennel each pitched complete game victories as the Union College softball team swept Hamilton College, 3-2 and 8-6 in a non-league doubleheader at Alexander Field Wednesday. The Dutchwomen improved to 7-11 overall while the Continentals now stand 9-14.
Dolinko allowed six hits and two earned runs in the first game for her fifth win of the season.
Joanna Chalifoux had two of Union's six hits and an RBI. Olivia Gozdz had two hits and an RBI for Hamilton and Phoebe Collins also had two hits. Starter Desmen DePaulis took the loss with five hits and three runs allowed in three innings. Gozdz gave Hamilton a 1-0 lead with a two out solo homer to center in the top of the first, her first round tripper of the season. Union scored two runs in the second coming on a wild pitch, and the Continentals tied it in the top of the third when Ursula Castiblanco had a two out RBI double down the left field line.
The Dutchwomen got the eventual winning run in the bottom of the third. Chalifoux's single to right center brought home
Courtney Casey from second after her double. Dolinko allowed one single over the last three inningsand just two hits over the last four innings.
The nightcap turned into a slugfest. Hamilton had 13 of the 19 hits in the game but a six run sixth inning led Union to the 8-6 victory. Hennel struck out seven and helped her cause with two RBIs, while Casey and
Kim Puzo also had two RBIs each. Puzo had an RBI single for a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Delaney Nicol had a leadoff homer to left to tie it in the top of the fourth, her third of the spring. Union led 2-1 aftera two out error in center scored Chalifoux from second.
The Continentals scored three in the fifth highlighted by a two run double by Castiblanco, who later scored on a throwing error, and it was 4-2 Hamilton. The guests made it 5-2 with an RBI single by Liz Brautigam in the top of the sixth. But Union sent 10 batters to the plate and scored six runs on just two hits, both producing two RBIs each from Hennel and Casey. Hamilton added another run in the seventh.
Union returns to Liberty League play Sunday with a pair of games at St. Lawrence at 1 p.m. Hamilton hosts NESCAC rival Williams at 5 p.m. on Friday.
