Oneonta sweeps Dutchwomen

ONEONTA, NY -- The SUNY Oneonta softball team extended its winning streak today to 11 games with a doubleheader sweep of visiting Union College.  The Red Dragons took game 1, 9-1, in five innings and then came from behind to take game 2, 7-6.  Oneonta is now 19-10 overall while Union dropped to 7-15 overall.

In the nightcap, the Dutchmen took a 5-0 lead after three innings.  After pushing across one run in the first, they put a four spot on the scoreboard in the top of the third inning.  The big hit in the inning was a double to left center field by sophomore Courtney Casey that scored Dana Dolinko and Dani Hennel.

Oneonta began its comeback with a single run in the bottom of the fourth inning on a solo home run by sophomore Cori McFall to lead off the inning. The Red Dragons added three more runs in the fifth on a three-run blast to right center field by senior Jamie Whittam. In the sixth inning, a single by Hennel knocked in Kara Brown from second base with Union's sixth run. The long ball played a role in the bottom of the inning, as freshman Lauren Sabatino went deep for her first collegiate round-tripper that tied the score at six. The winning run scored on a fielding error that allowed junior Killeen Martin to score from third. Junior Amanda Graziano picked up the win in relief of starter Kate Wood.  Graziano threw five innings and allowed only one run while striking out three batters.

In the opener, Oneonta took advantage of seven miscues, including five errors in the fourth inning that led to six runs.  Junior Sabrina D'Angelis went the distance striking out four to record her eight win of the season. McFall, Jennifer Brocco and Alyssa Garrison each collected a pair of hits in the game.  McFall and Brocco also each drove in two runs. Hennel had three hits in the nightcap.

Union will host Senior Day Saturday for a Liberty League doubleheader against Skidmore at Alexander Field at 1 p.m.
